About JetBlue Airways

JetBlue is built for passengers who are looking for a cheaper alternative to flying legacy airlines but want to maintain a quality experience amenity-wise. Travelers who are based on the East Coast, or seeking to fly down South to Florida or to the Caribbean and Latin America, should consider JetBlue as a major option. While JetBlue does have a great business product, their transcontinental and transatlantic catalog of flights might be a step behind what you'll experience on the legacies. But if you can stomach narrowbody flying, JetBlue might have some real value for you.

JetBlue is my preferred airline as I'm from New York. I've taken JetBlue on transcontinental flights to the West Coast, short hops to Boston, and for leisure down to San Juan. While their product was great value when they started out, it seems that charm and excitement has run out a bit. However, their core value items like free Wi-Fi and live entertainment streaming make it a strong competitor at least along the East Coast.

Their Airbus A320 fleet does show some age. It's honestly a mixed bag whether you get a modernly furnished A320 or an older one with a credit card slot for an entertainment system. You shouldn't have this problem on their A321s or A220s. But the most important thing about JetBlue is that they get you where you need to go safely. Never had a problem with the airline when it comes to safety concerns, and their record definitely reflects that.

Who Should Fly JetBlue Airways?

East Coast travelers who are looking for a low cost alternative to the legacies but seek more creature comforts than what you would get with an ultra low cost carrier. If you're flying on business or across the Atlantic, you will get your money's worth on price but comfort on longer segments might be an issue given their all-narrowbody fleet. For Caribbean and Florida flying from the Northeast, JetBlue is hard to beat.

What the Data Shows

The top airports that JetBlue flies from are JFK, BOS, and FLL. A clear reflection of its East Coast positioning and leisure-heavy route map. The airline sports a decent load factor, and the Caribbean-facing international routes post some of the highest numbers in the fleet, consistent with strong leisure demand from the Northeast.

The issue with JetBlue that doesn't show in the BTS data is financial. The airline has been bleeding money and is probably the next carrier in line to face serious restructuring unless something changes. Strong load factors don't always translate to profitability when unit costs are high, and JetBlue's cost structure has been a persistent challenge.
